Honoring Heroes: Celebrating Veterans in Our Community

Each November, our nation comes together to recognize the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of our veterans.

For seniors, especially those in or considering assisted living communities, this season can be particularly meaningful. Many of our communities are home to veterans who are living, breathing reminders of the resilience, strength, and history that have shaped our country.

At Priority Life Care, we believe celebrating Veterans Day can bring people together in wonderful ways.

Why Honoring Veterans Matters

Veterans make up a significant part of the senior population in the U.S. Approximately 50% of U.S. veterans are aged 65 or older, which means many of these heroes may already be part of or considering assisted living communities like ours.

It’s important to note that when we talk about recognizing our veterans, it’s not just about the medals they’ve earned, but instead, the sense of duty and sacrifices they’ve made for years, often without fanfare.

Honoring these courageous individuals helps foster a culture of gratitude. According to research, showing appreciation can greatly improve overall well-being, not just for the person receiving it but also for the one giving it.

How Assisted Living Communities Can Celebrate Veterans

In our assisted living communities, we host events, tributes, and other small gestures to bring neighbors together and make sure American heroes feel truly valued. Here are a few ways we do that:

1. Veterans Recognition Ceremony

A special ceremony to honor veterans is one of the most touching ways our communities express gratitude. Residents, family members, and staff in our communities come together for a morning or afternoon of appreciation.

Whether it includes the presentation of small award medallions, guest speakers sharing their gratitude, or a performance of patriotic music, these are moments our veterans and their peers treasure.

2. Veterans Wall of Honor

Veterans in our community can visually tell their stories and create a legacy of service. We dedicate spaces in our common areas to photos, medals, and histories shared by veterans.

3. Hosting Storytelling Events

A storytelling event is a way to pass down history while creating a closer bond with veterans. We invite them to share their experiences with neighbors, staff, and even local schools or organizations. If someone prefers not to speak in front of a group, we often find that just spending time with other veterans is a great way for our residents to bond.

4. Partnering with Local Organizations

Organizations such as veteran support groups, schools, and local businesses are often eager to get involved on Veterans Day. We coordinate with them for meaningful activities like sending care packages to active-duty personnel, participating in parades, or inviting guest speakers to our events.

5. Engaging in Acts of Service Together

Volunteering as a group is an incredible bonding activity that doubles as a way to honor veterans’ legacy of service. Whether it’s supporting a local veteran-focused charity or simply assembling care packages for those in need, these types of actions remind everyone of the values veterans hold dear.

The Power of Community in Supporting Veterans

One of the most touching things about assisted living is the sense of community and camaraderie we create here. Sharing moments like Veterans Day celebrations strengthens that sense of belonging. It allows our veterans to feel seen, respected, and supported, while also giving non-vets the chance to connect and reminisce with a shared time in history.

Veterans have given us so much, and it’s only fitting that we give back in whatever ways we can. Whether you’re helping share a story, participating in a ceremony, or even just taking a moment to thank someone, your actions matter.

At Priority Life Care, we’re proud to support our veteran community and ensure they always feel at home.

Brentwood has truly transformed in the 6 months, with focus on making the resident’s the main point and making sure their needs are being cared for and met. As I’ve walked down the hallways, I’ve noticed bigger smiles and contagious laughs of resident’s feeling right at “home”, and you can’t help but to crack a smile and laugh right along with them. Keep up the Great work Brentwood Staff.

My bestfriend is Ali, she is the Memory Care Director. She invites me and my 2 children to most of the events and we absolutely love coming to them. The staff is amazing and so great with my kids. The residents love to see my 2 little girls and I feel like it brightens their time, while we are there. I have never had a bad experience there. Everyone is so helpful and kind. Everything is clean and well-taken care of. The events are always so much fun ((for all ages)) and my children usually fall asleep as soon as we leave the parking lot, because of all the excitement. If I had an elderly family member that needed special care, Brentwood would be my first choice.
